Safety/Manufacturing Engineer

Job Summary
The Manufacturing Engineer (Safety) is responsible for planning, implementing, and coordinating safety programs, requiring application of engineering principles and technology, to prevent or correct unsafe environmental working conditions. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual with strong hands on manufacturing engineering experience and be able to complete projects from concept to execution with limited direction. The Manufacturing Engineer (Safety) will also support projects in manufacturing to address critical gaps in quality, productivity, and inventory processes. This is a full-time exempt position located in Attalla, AL.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
                1.          Evaluate manufacturing processes by applying knowledge of safety standards, machine design, machine parameters, product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling and materials; conferring with vendors and soliciting observations from plant operators, all while focusing on the safety of the processes.

2.          Work closely with operations team to develop and implement successful fixes to improve safety; change practices where necessary to ensure that safety standards are met.

3.          Work independently and externally with outside vendors on designs and solutions. Evaluate designs and solutions to meet requirements needed for excellence in safety.

4.          Create documentation and develop SOPs for the facility.

5.          Assure product and process safety by designing testing methods, then testing finished product and process capabilities and establishing standards to confirm the manufacturing process and results.

6.          Work closely with external vendors to implement any new changes or adaptations based on safety reviews.

7.          Improve manufacturing efficiency through analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements and equipment layout to achieve high levels of safety and quality.

8.          Utilize FMEA, problem-solving, and other tools to drive continuous improvement in plant and processes.

9.          Provide manufacturing decision making information through calculating production, labor and material costs, reviewing production schedules and estimating future requirements for safety, quality, and productivity.

10.          Develop and mentor staff and technicians and provide strong developmental support to encourage a safety focus.

 

Special Location/Position Requirements:
Located in Attalla, AL
Job Specifications (Work Experience, Skills, Abilities, etc.)
·        Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or similar discipline, or 5+ years of applicable professional experience is required.

·        Knowledge of safety standards and quality practices, i.e. OSHA, FMEA’s, DOE, etc. preferred.

·        Knowledge of complex manufacturing situations, specifications, safety standards, quality standards, product development, CAD/CAM and technical specifications.

·        Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with ability to interact with all levels of employees, customers and outside professionals.

·        Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.

·        Ability to mentor and teach the team effective problem-solving methods.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.

Education Requirements:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or similar discipline or 10+ years of applicable professional experience.

 

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions:
Normal office conditions and occasional travel may be required to meet with suppliers.  Job demands may require long periods of sitting, telephone work, and/or computer work, as well as interaction with other people.  Normal office conditions include walking, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing stairs, lifting, driving, and/or traveling.
